hopefulandrea: Looking back, (and being 33 I can do

Looking back, (and being 33 I can do that now; it’s awesome) I can see a major shift in my life from perfectionism to freedom. If you feel you’re being held back by some version of perfectionism, I hope my story can encourage you. I always leaned towards people-pleasing, and if everyone wasn’t pleased about everything about me, I would let myself feel I failed. For me, that’s where perfectionism began. Since my “type” of perfectionism was self-oriented (check out the book “Perfecting Ourselves to Death” to read about the types), it led me down a path of eating disorders, social anxiety, and abusive relationships. I got to the point where I can honestly say I hated myself. My healing journey included straightening out some theology by actually reading the Bible, cognitive behavioral therapy with a professional, and creating music. Guys, gratitude suffocates perfectionism. Purposeful gratitude was such an effective tool in combating the crippling perfectionism that tended to take over my attention. If I could find a way to refocus and feel thankful for what WAS going right and what I did have, I could more easily believe, “Good is better and more real than perfect.” The world needs you to be you, now.  We can’t afford to wait until we feel 100% prepared before we begin to live our lives. To do our calling. We get one chance at this, and it’s NOT going to be completely ideal. We don’t get to choose that option, unfortunately. The only two choices are: live now, even though it’s messy and awkward and scary and weird, or run out of time still trying to make everything perfect. If you’re a writer, share what’s on your heart. Even if you might know more later, just share it already. Even if there’s a stinkin’ typo! We still need you on your post, soldier! If you’re a parent, sibling, friend, co-worker, human - the rest of us actually benefit from your contribution. Even when it has a crack in it. Flaws don’t negate, diminish or devalue you. They make your story more relatable. Only you are you. And I’m actually really relieved that you’re not perfect. So in the spirit of antiperfectionism, I'm posting this pic where all I see is my tummy. Then moving on:)

hopefulandrea: My cover of The Killers Wonderful Wonderful - here

My cover of The Killers Wonderful Wonderful - here's what I think it means... There is an allegory in the Bible, in Ezekiel 16, that God makes up as a way to explain how much He cares about the Israelites. He tells them, "On the day you were born you were not washed with water to cleanse you, nor rubbed with salt, nor wrapped in swaddling cloths. No eye pitied you, to do any of these things to you out of compassion for you, but you were cast out on the open field, for you were abhorred, on the day that you were born. And when I passed by you and saw you wallowing in your blood, I said to you in your blood, ‘Live!’ I clothed you also with embroidered cloth and shod you with fine leather. I adorned you with ornaments and put bracelets on your wrists and a chain on your neck. And I put a ring on your nose and earrings in your ears and a beautiful crown on your head. You ate fine flour and honey and oil. You grew exceedingly beautiful and advanced to royalty." I feel that this song was written with an idea/theme of acceptance. Feeling accepted by yourself and by God. Even if you felt rejected before, even by your own parents, you can find a place of peace in your heart and know you were created the way you are, purposefully and carefully, and you are accepted and loved. At least that's what I was thinking about when I covered this song :) If you want to hear the whole thing it's on my YT channel - AndreaHamilton

“Creativity takes courage.” - Henri Matisse // In the aftermath of the industry’s fragmentation and the sound design revolution, it’s easy for music makers to feel “a-dime-a-dozen.” There are so many musicians more popular, privileged, and/or prolific than you, it tempts you to stop altogether. But if you’re someone that knows in the bottom of their heart that no other endeavor is going to feel right, all you can do is keep your nose to the grindstone and push forward. And know that was you carry IS unique, that you ARE going to find and reach your people, and that their world WILL be better because you didn’t give up.
