Today is Indigenous Peoples’/Native American Day. I honor my Lakota ancestors, two of them here: Chief Iron Nation (Lakota=Maza Oyate) was my paternal great-great-grandfather. He married my great-great-grandmother Hail (Lakota=Wasu (hail as in frozen rain)). She was Walega-un-wohan (Boil in Bladder) tiyospaye of the Sicangu Lower Brule Lakota (Kul Wikasa Oyate). Chief Iron Nation was born February 1815 in the Dakota Territory. He was the most notable historical figure from the Lower Brule Sioux Tribe and was best known for his signing of the 1851 Ft. Laramie Treaty, the 1865 Ft. Sully Treaty, and the Ft. Laramie Treaty of 1868. He died in 1894 and the inscription on his grave marker reads, “Children, Love One Another.” Iron Nation’s gravesite was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2014. The other photo here is of my great-grandmother, Elizabeth Hail, daughter of Chief Iron Nation and Hail.

I'm growing a new-to-my-garden heirloom winter squash this year. It's called 'Lakota' and was initially cultivated by Native Americans in the Missouri River Valley, most notably by the Lakota. It was first recorded by white settlers in 1820. My Lakota squash are still young and the skin is yellow. Eventually the skin will turn a deep orange with green streaks.
